The tachiai is the charge that starts a sumo bout. Both wrestlers crouch behind their lines, both fists go down on the clay, and they go when the two of them are ready — not when an official says so. It is the only start in sport that the competitors themselves have to agree on, and it is usually over in a few seconds.
